Top tips for HR
In a time where Hybrid and home working is becoming the norm, and the testing of a four-day working week is being carried out in more and more places, how are you handling your employees? Over the last few months, we’ve seen many headlines talking about burnout, return to work anxiety, and the differing approaches companies have taken to handling such problems.
Inevitably some of these issues come to land on HR shoulders to sort out, creating new strategies and ideas to help everyone readjust to life in the face-to-face working world. Here’s a few ideas we came up with that might help to relax and remove any tension someone may have about returning to work:
Vibrant workspaces:
Getting away from home to help focus doesn’t mean you need to be in a sharp-edged grey environment, let your employees decorate their workspace with personal effects, and try to make the place more natural and interesting with plants and colours. Also including some ‘retreat’ areas that would allow for a quiet break away from the hustle and bustle of the office, could be invaluable to those finding they are feeling a little overwhelmed by the experience.
Speak to your people:
Make it clear if anyone is struggling that they can talk about it openly and then discuss what changes could be made to make them more comfortable. Maybe a phased schedule for returning back into the office, slowly decreasing the hours spent working from home, and increasing in the workplace.
Second Wave Icebreakers:
Although everyone’s been working together, has there actually been any time yet to get to know each other? If not, setting up some team activities and team building days could be great for getting everyone comfortable with each other and synced up with what the team’s atmosphere and social aesthetic is. This can help improve communication and collaboration when it comes to team projects, and it’s also fun!
Recruitment Success Story – Monmouthshire Building Society – Long Term Relationships
Back in 2021, following the pandemic we were approached by Monmouthshire Building Society, a successful building society that was founded over 150 years ago with a Head office based in Newport, Wales.
After an in-depth meeting to understand more about the role requirements and what sort of person would be a suitable for the long term, we were super excited to work exclusively to find the standout candidate for this opportunity.
With our fantastic HR and L&D market knowledge we build with candidates on a day-to-day basis, we couldn’t wait to support with the recruitment of this fantastic opportunity. We had a number of in-depth & insightful meetings with candidates. We also quickly built a solid relationship with the Hiring Manager & HR Director to ensure that we knew exactly who they were looking for. The rest is history.

What does a typical day look like for you?
Every day is different, and I’m so lucky to work for such a brilliant company who really support our colleagues to thrive. At present, we have a few fantastic L&D programmes taking place , so a typical day could be facilitating some of these , working closely with my colleagues on planning future sessions, or mentoring and coaching colleagues , to the flip side of understanding our data insights to ensure our offerings reflect what our colleagues need to do their jobs brilliantly and support strategic growth.
What are your key career achievements / highlights?
Wow that is a difficult one as there are so many such as seeing our Talent programmes evolve year on year with more interest and our colleagues seeing the Society investing in these programmes really make a difference to our Academy team winning two awards, one HR in Wales Creativity and Innovation Award and for British HR Awards for Recruitment initiative award but more me personally was winning the MBS Inspiring Leader Award, this is nominated by our colleagues which made it extra special as I am not a people manager and our colleagues see me as an Inspiring Leader was quite emotional.
What would you like to achieve in your next 12 months?
I would like to just continue doing what I am doing but offering more support for our colleagues and getting them to take “ As Bev ( our Head of People ) would say “ 5 seconds of courage” to try something new, apply for a new secondment or role. Whatever happens growth comes from change and change can be scary but also exciting.
How would you describe your journey / experience with H2R Selection?
From the initial conversation, H2R Selection really took time to get to know me, what I loved to do and what my personality was, and this allowed time to match me with the right organisation that reflected my values and personality. H2R kept in touch along the way providing feedback on what to expect at each stage and on the journey itself and even after I was successful in role, continually checking in to see how things are going and celebrating my successes. I would really recommend H2R as the journey doesn’t end once you have secured the role, but the relationship continues.
